Overview

The Anomaly Scan is a 30-minute ultrasound appointment that carefully reviews your baby’s development and checks for any major visible abnormalities. This scan is best performed between 18 and 21 weeks of pregnancy.

During the scan, the sonographer looks in detail at your baby’s:

  • Brain and head structures

  • Spine and spinal cord

  • Heart and cardiac structures

  • Face (including the lips)

  • Abdomen and internal organs

  • Kidneys and bladder

  • Bones and limbs

The scan also assesses:

  • Your baby’s growth and measurements in line with gestational age

  • Overall anatomical development

  • Placental position

We recommend bringing your hospital or NHS records to this appointment.

This scan is a reassurance scan and is not a diagnostic examination. It does not replace any NHS or hospital antenatal scans or appointments. While some abnormalities may be suspected during this scan, it cannot confirm or exclude all fetal anomalies. If any concerns or potential abnormalities are identified, you should contact your NHS midwife, GP, or attend your hospital maternity unit as soon as possible for further assessment.

What you’ll receive

  • Three 2D black & white thermal prints

  • Comprehensive written report

  • Up to 5 guests (including children)

Important note
This scan assesses development and looks for detectable anomalies at the time of appointment. Some conditions may not be visible at this stage – including within standard NHS scans. If anything concerning is seen, we’ll advise immediate follow-up with your GP/midwife.
